Congressional Republicans have taken a significant step forward in their impeachment inquiry into President Biden by issuing legal summonses to various members of the Biden family.
The House Oversight Committee has officially subpoenaed Hunter Biden, James Biden, and Biden family associate Rob Walker. In addition, they are seeking transcribed interviews with five other individuals.
The White House has swiftly responded by accusing the Republicans of "misusing their authority for a smear campaign."
This impeachment inquiry was initiated by House Republicans in September after they claimed to have discovered evidence suggesting President Biden's involvement in his family members' business dealings, both domestically and abroad.
However, during the Oversight Committee's initial hearing in September, it became apparent that more evidence was needed to ascertain whether the President had committed any impeachable offenses, a sentiment shared even by some Republicans on the panel.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the House Oversight Committee revealed that they had obtained financial records indicating that members of the Biden family had allegedly established over 20 shell companies during Joe Biden's vice presidency to conceal payments from overseas.
Furthermore, the committee alleges that the Biden family, their associates, and affiliated companies had received more than $24 million from foreign nations, including some considered US adversaries.
"The House Oversight Committee has diligently followed the money and compiled a body of evidence that demonstrates Joe Biden's awareness of, involvement in, and benefit from his family's influence-peddling schemes," stated Chairman James Comer of Kentucky.
"Now, the House Oversight Committee is planning to question members of the Biden family and their associates based on this evidence."
Hunter Biden has been summoned to testify under oath before the committee on December 13, while James Biden and Mr. Walker are expected to appear on December 6 and November 29, respectively.
The committee has also requested transcribed interviews with Hunter's wife Melissa Cohen, James' wife Sara Biden, Hunter's brother's widow Hallie Biden, her sister Elizabeth Secundy, and Hunter's former business partner Tony Bobulinski.
The White House responded promptly, issuing a memo after the subpoenas were issued, accusing Republicans of prioritizing "this partisan investigation over virtually all issues that truly matter to the American people."
During the daily White House briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "This investigation has been ongoing for a year now and has failed to produce any evidence of wrongdoing by the President because there isn't any."
These subpoenas and interview requests come on the heels of the special counsel overseeing the federal probe into Hunter Biden's activities testifying to lawmakers in a closed-door session.
In that hearing, David Weiss refuted Republican claims of White House interference, stating that he was not obstructed from pursuing charges against the President's son.
Hunter Biden currently faces three federal gun charges, to which he has entered a not guilty plea. The investigation is still ongoing.
