In a bold pre-dawn operation, former Guinean military ruler Moussa Dadis Camara, along with three alleged accomplices, successfully escaped from prison.
This incident unfolded in Conakry, the capital city, when a group of armed men stormed the jail, liberating the inmates. While one of the escapees has been located, authorities remain on high alert in their pursuit of the remaining fugitives.
The escapees, including Captain Camara, are currently standing trial for their alleged involvement in the tragic events of a 2009 protest that resulted in the deaths of over 150 people.
This event shook the nation profoundly, as it involved troops attacking protesters who were demonstrating against military rule, leading to numerous casualties and even reports of sexual violence against women.
Guinea's Justice Minister, Charles Alphonse Wright, wasted no time addressing the situation on local radio, assuring the public of the authorities' determination to find the escapees and bring them to justice, underlining the gravity of the situation.
Conakry witnessed chaos as gunshots rang out before dawn, prompting the city center's closure and the deployment of military vehicles on the streets, intensifying the tense atmosphere.
Among the fugitives, Colonel Claude Pivi, a former government minister also implicated in the 2009 tragedy, managed to escape. Col. Pivi, along with Capt. Camara and nine other former officials, have consistently denied the allegations against them.
Captain Camara faces charges related tois command responsibility over the soldiers involved in the alleged crimes.
His rise to power in 2008 after the death of long-time President Lansana Conté marked a tumultuous period in Guinea's history. He was eventually ousted and fled the country after the Conakry killings and an assassination attempt.
Capt. Camara, who had been residing in Burkina Faso, made the courageous decision to return to Guinea in September 2022 to face justice. This move was seen as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to hold those responsible for the 2009 tragedy accountable.
It is essential to note that Guinea is currently under military rule, part of a broader trend in several former French colonies in West and Central Africa that have experienced coups and political upheaval in recent years.
The most recent coup occurred in 2021 when former French soldier Col. Mamady Doumbouya led a rebellion against President Alpha Condé, subsequently being sworn in as the new president.
