The President of the ECOWAS Agency of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sent a delegation of Islamic scholars (ulama) to accelerate progress in their ongoing dialogue with the authorities. military in the Republic from Niger.
Tinubu asked the Muslim clerics who had previously participated in discussions with the junta to create favorable conditions for the restoration of constitutional democratic governance in the Republic of Niger.
The President received the full report at the Presidential Villa in Abuja from Ulema, who was led to a meeting with the President by Sheikh Bala Lau.
According to a statement by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, the press conference came after the last two visits of the ulama to the Republic of Niger.
Islamic leaders have informed the president that the junta is ready to intensify dialogue with ECOWAS, as further steps are taken to prevent armed conflict, with a more detailed acceptance of view of ECOWAS by Nigerian military council officials. Responding to the Ulema delegation amid ethnic rumors spread by national and foreign political figures, President Tinubu affirmed that he is at the forefront of peacefully resolving the crisis right away. even as a growing number of hawkish individuals urge faster intervention.
“I am facing a very serious situation. If you put ECOWAS aside, others will react, things beyond our control. It is I who keep these sides. It is I who is keeping ECOWAS,” he revealed. Faced with the urgent situation, the President added:
“Even this morning, I received a lot of phone calls about the readiness of countries with their forces and military contributions. However, I told them to wait. I meet ulama and I will answer you.
President Tinubu told the Muslim delegation that the military junta was responsible for endangering the entire population of the Republic of Niger.
"They cannot use the weapons given to them to defend the sovereignty of the country and against the people of the country," he said.
The ECOWAS President pledged that the regional organization would remain steadfast in its commitment to engage diplomatically with all stakeholders and seek a peaceful solution to the impasse facing the Republic of Niger. At the request of Muslim scholars to the federal government to oversee the distribution of palliatives to the states, the President promised to provide more palliatives to micro, small, and medium-sized businesses ( MSME) nationwide.
He also called on state governments to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution and management of these mitigations.
