Algeria and Egypt have opposed military intervention in the Republic of Niger, stressing that dialogue remains the best option out of the current political crisis in the country.

While advocating for dialogue to resolve the crisis in Niger, they assert that any military activity in the country could create problems in Nigeria, its closest neighbour.

This is even more so when there were signs yesterday that more than 7,000 migrants are now stranded in Niger due to border closures.

To find a solution to this nagging problem, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sent Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to Nigeria, the Republic of Benin and Ghana. The foreign minister, who began his tour yesterday, is expected to hold consultations with his counterparts from ECOWAS countries, with the task of advocating diplomacy rather than military intervention.

Algeria, which shares a 1,000-kilometer land border with Niger, had previously warned of a military solution, which Tebboune said would pose a "direct threat" to his North African nation.

He Said:

“There will be no solution without us (Algeria). We are the first to be affected. »

The African Union suspended Niger on Tuesday until civilian authority is restored and also said it would assess the impact of any armed intervention.

Algeria also shares borders with Libya and Mali, both of which have been affected by conflicts that have lasted for years. Niger is the fourth country in West Africa since 2020, after Burkina Faso, Guinea and Mali.

The authorities of Burkina Faso and Mali have stated that any military intervention in their neighboring country would be considered a "declaration of war" against their country.
