In recent Imo State political developments, the Lamidi Apapa-led faction encountered a setback in their bid to replace LP candidate Achonu, as the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, dismissed their ex-parte motion.
The faction’s attempt to challenge Achonu's candidacy was denied, with the court instructing the service of court processes to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a response, scheduling the case for further mention.
The Apapa faction's move aimed to secure an interim injunction restraining INEC from recognizing any candidate aside from Chief Ukaegbu Joseph, who emerged from a primary held on April 16.
They also sought an order for INEC to acknowledge Joseph as the legitimate gubernatorial candidate and to endorse Apapa as the National Chairman, alongside Alhaji Lawal Saleh as the National Secretary.
However, Justice Ekwo refrained from granting these orders without INEC's input, highlighting the necessity for INEC to present its perspective in court.
This legal dispute stems from the prolonged leadership conflict between the Apapa-led faction and the Julius Abure group, which conducted the primary poll resulting in Mr. Peter Obi's candidacy in the previous presidential election for the party.
